Wolfenstein: The New Order developer releases new Quake episode

Dopefish lives!

MachineGames, developer of Wolfenstein: The New Order and Wolfenstein: The Old Blood, just released a new episode of Quake in honor of the classic shooter's 20th anniversary.

MachineGames has made the episode, called "Dopa," available to download for free "as a gift to the fans," but you will need your own copy of Quake to run it. Newcomers should beware that it's pretty unforgiving.

Here's the easiest way to get the new episode up and running:

  • Get a copy of Quake from Steam, or if you already own it, import it into your Steam library.
  • Download the episode package and extract it into the Quake folder
  • Right-click on Quake in your Steam library and select "properties."
  • Click on "set launch options" and type "-game dopa" into the prompt.

Now all you have to do is run the game on Steam and you'll be gibbing Enforcers with your shotgun in no time!

Like other id Software games, Quake has a rich history of fan-made mods, levels and source ports. One of the earliest mods to hit it big on the Quake servers was Team Fortress, which would later be ported by Valve for their internal Half-Life engine, GoldSrc, and transformed into a major series.

The next game in the franchise, Quake Champions, was recently announced at Bethesda's E3 press conference. The title will be directed by Tim Willits, who has had a role on every Quake game to date that id Software has developed. Further details on the game will be revealed during QuakeCon this August.
