Capcom Discusses Strategy Going Forward, Brings Up New Genres, Old Franchises

A new Mega Man? Yes please!

After a generation spent in a slow slide into irrelevance, Capcom seem to be working hard to rebuild this generation. Games such as Dead Rising 3, Monster Hunter Ultimate 4, and Street Fighter 5 have all been well received, and garnered a community of vocal fans, and the upcoming Resident Evil 7 looks set to continue that trend.

Going forward, Capcom plans to continue its growth and become a major player, particularly by investing in some new areas that were hitherto uncharted for the company. In their annual report, the company notes (via NeoGAF) that “[they] cannot ignore genres such as shooting and strategy games with massive numbers of players when considering Consumer, Online and eSports market growth potential.”

But it’s not just new horizons that they have their sights set on- in the same report, Capcom also discuss revivals of their older franchises, with either reboots or re-imaginings. Exact franchises are not mentioned, and Capcom mention that these revivals could be spread across consoles and mobiles, but at any rate, the prospect of a new Dino Crisis or Mega Man is sure to make quite a few fans giddy.

Let’s hope, then, that Capcom can truly pull a comeback here- at its peak, the publisher was one of the most beloved companies in the industry, and with their cachet of IPs and franchises, I am sure no one wants to see them decline into obscurity. I have my fingers crossed, Capcom.
