Capcom is continuing its Resident Evil 20th anniversary retrospective interview series, this time reflecting on the second act of the franchise, speaking with Resident Evil: Revelations and Umbrella Chronicles producer Masachika Kawata.
For the first three major entries into the Resident Evil series, there was a consistent theme of fear and horror—though Kawata, who created the backgrounds to RE3, would be part of the franchise’s biggest evolution toward big-budget entertainment and gameplay, with Resident Evil 4 and the entries that followed.
He adds that Revelations, originally developed for handheld, helped propel the series’ graphics and gameplay, carrying the innovative spirit of the original games.
Kawata admits the drastic changes in the retrospective, but maintains that “horror” is still at the core of the series, even if Chris Redfield is loaded with steroids and can defeat an overpowered Albert Wesker.
